Recycled plastic ‘Eco-Block’ schools

Brief

Classroom of Hope and Block Solutions commissioned a return on investment analysis of their project to rebuild 200 schools in Lombok which had been destroyed in the region’s 2018 earthquakes, using recycled plastic technology. The report is one of the first to quantify the economic, social and environmental costs of plastic in Indonesia.

Read the report:

Results

  • Each $ invested in accelerating the rebuild of schools destroyed in the earthquake yields $15+ in economic and environmental benefits

  • A child in a temporary school learns half as much as they would in a permanent school, with the loss of learning costing the Lombok economy up to $72 million per year in future productivity

  • Each tonne of un-recycled plastic causes $190-$360 in damages to the people and economy of Lombok

Impact

The report reached senior Ministers in the Indonesian government, helping Classroom of Hope and Block Solutions sign an agreement to build the world's first recycled plastic block factory in Asia.
